Biometric Characteristics

Iris Biometrics

How does iris biometrics work?

The iris is the elastic, pigmented, connective tissue that controls the pupil. An iris scan will analyze over 200 points of the iris, such as:

  • rings
  • furrows
  • freckles
  • the corona
and then compares it to a previously recorded template. Glasses, contact lenses, and even eye surgery does not change the characteristics of the iris. And to make sure that it is a real "live" eye but not images/photos, the system varies the light and check that the pupil dilates or contracts.

How is this technology being used?

Prison:
  •  Lancaster County Prison in Pennsylvania uses iris biometrics to identify prisoners
  • security check for newly built Berkshire County Jail for employees
Airports:
  • The system used a 30 frame/sec, black and white camera to take a picture of the eye from 6 to 36 inches away. Airline passengers will step up to a terminal kiosk and get their iris scanned in one second. The data will be compared to the stored records. Then the passenger can be issued a boarding pass.
ATM access:
  • the customers looks in a sensor camera and it instantly captures the his/her iris. If the iris data matches the record stored, the access will be granted
